The Stanford Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) offers a free, intensive, structured training program to help individuals treat and manage diabetes. Classes focus on management lifestyle behaviors and emotional management, lasting 2 1/2 hours, once per week, for six weeks.Facilitated workshops utilize a detailed manual by two trained leaders, one or both peer leaders with diabetes. Classes are highly participative, fostering mutual support and success to build participants' confidence in managing their health. Each participant receives the companion book, "Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, 4th Edition," and an audio relaxation tape.This program doesn't conflict with existing treatments. If conflicts arise, participants are advised to follow their physicians' orders and discuss discrepancies. For medical questions, participants are referred to their physicians or diabetes educators.
