Rutgers Cooperative Extension | Diabetes Self-Management Education Classes (DSME)

Empowers individuals with diabetes through one-on-one Diabetes Self-Management Education Classes (DSME) and training, providing the necessary knowledge and skills to modify behavior and effectively self-manage the disease and its related conditions. Facilitated by licensed health professionals, the course tailors its approach to the specific needs, goals, and life experiences of each person with diabetes, guided by evidence-based standards. DSME covers a range of topics, including the diabetes disease process, treatment options, nutrition management, physical activity, medication utilization, blood glucose monitoring, prevention and treatment of acute and chronic complications, goal setting, problem solving, psychosocial adjustment, and preconception care and management during pregnancy if applicable. Conducted on an individual basis, DSME offers personalized guidance for optimal diabetes management.

Individuals with diabetes and their families, with particular focus on those who are newly diagnosed.

**Part of the Diabetes Initiative managed by the NJ Department of Health** DSME is for individuals who have been living with a Diabetes diagnosis for some time already, and/or want to be better educated on self-management techniques.
