The Stanford Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) empowers individuals to treat and manage diabetes through a free, intensive, structured training program. Classes, lasting 2 1/2 hours weekly for six weeks, focus on managing lifestyle behaviors and emotions.Facilitated by trained leaders, including peer leaders with diabetes, classes promote mutual support and success, boosting participants' confidence. Participants receive a copy of the companion book and an audio relaxation tape. The program is designed not to alter or conflict with existing treatments. If conflicts arise, participants are advised to follow physicians' orders and discuss discrepancies with them. Medical questions should be directed to physicians or diabetes educators.
