Applicants should apply for retirement benefits at least 3 months before retiring, and disability payments are for those with severe impairments hindering work or leading to death. Eligibility

Eligibility includes low-income individuals who are blind, disabled, or 65 and older, as well as disabled or blind children under 18 for SSI; children under 22 who are disabled or became disabled before 22 for Disabled Children's Benefits; widows, widowers, divorced spouses, and children under 18 (or disabled before 22) of a deceased worker for Survivor's Benefits; and individuals at least 61 years and 9 months old who are not receiving benefits and want retirement benefits to start within four months.
